OPENING: from the middle of June until the beginning of October
In 1913, the Rifugio Paul Preuss appeared on the summit of the Porte Neigre, in the heart of the Catinaccio Group, at the feet of the famous Torri del Vajolet (Vajolet Towers), and represents the ambitious goal of many excursions and climbing routes of varying levels of difficulty.
Built by the famous mountain guide Tita Piaz and dedicated to Paul Preuss, another famous climber from the beginning of the 20th century and a pioneer of free climbing, it is still managed by the Piaz family to this day.
A panoramic terrace on Porte Neigre, in the vicinity of the south-eastern face of the Catinaccio Group, from the Torri del Vajolet across to the Punta Emma.
An easy, gravel path, also suitable for children.
The kitchen is run by the owner and offers homemade regional specialities.
From Pera di Fassa, taking the SS 48 Dolomites route: once you have crossed through the village, there is a series of large parking areas on the right, as well as the “Bus Navetta” (shuttle bus) service for Gardeccia and the Pera/Ciampedie chairlift.
The shuttle bus goes up to the Valle del Vajolet from the end of May through to mid-October. Departures are every 15 minutes. The road is always closed to traffic.
From Vigo di Fassa, it is possible to use the Catinaccio cable car, which takes you up to the Rifugio Ciampedie. Then you can then enjoy a peaceful walk along path no. 540, which is signposted to the Rifugio Gardeccia (45 minutes).
Around one hour from the Rifugio Gardeccia, climbing up path no. 546, which is easy and wide, you will reach the Rifugio Preuss, which appears in the distance on the summit of the rock.
